Genin
(Or literally Low-level ninjas)
Genin are the lowest level of Ninja and also the ones that display the most divergence in power (Compare Sakura and Neji, who are both genin). When they become genin, ninjas start to do their bit for their village's economy- being sent on missions that the village gets paid for. They are typically sent either on D-rank missions, which are the lowest rank and are generally simple, risk-free jobs of manual labor, or C-rank missions, which are a cut above that and begin to verge on real "ninja" work--though they are still generally risk-free. Recently, Konohagakure has been shorthanded in upper-level ninja, and has been forced to occasionally send Genin on B-rank missions.
Chûunin
(Or literally Mid-level ninjas)
Chûnin (Chūnin) are ninjas who are qualified to watch over and guide other Ninjas. Some of them function as teachers (such as Iruka) and others serve as military strategists in charge of small teams who need to make decisions and utilise the skills of the shinobi under their command to the maximum effect. Chūnin are typically sent on C-rank missions or B-rank missions.
In the English manga, the level is also known as the "Journeyman" level.
Tokubetsu Jônin
(Or literally Specialised high-level ninjas)
Tokubetsu Jônin (Tokubetsu Jōnin) are ninjas who, rather than all-around Jônin training, have chosen to specialise in a single area of the training. They are elite specialists in their areas and are often assigned as subordinates to regular Jônin when their services are needed.
Jôunin
(Or literally High-level ninjas)
Jônin (Jōnin) are generally ninjas with great individual skill who have a lot of experience and serve as military captains. They are often sent on A-rank missions, and experienced Jōnin may even be sent on S-rank missions (which are considered of even greater risk and difficulty than A-rank.) They are sometimes assigned as senseis for three-person teams of Genin. It is as of yet unknown what one has to undergo to become one.
Though unnamed, there is a distinct "beyond Jōnin" class of power, the members of which can range from Criminal organisation members to leaders of noble clans, and are all clearly much more powerful than the average Jōnin of Konoha. This class is often erroneously referred to as "Sennin", which means "Sage" and is a title held by Jiraiya. Because Jiraiya, Orochimaru and Tsunade were once teammates and now all possess roughly the same amount of power, the term "Sennin" is often further confused with "Sannin", which simply means "Three ninja" and is used when referring to the three of them as the "legendary three".
Kage
(Or literally "Shadow")
Those who achieved the title of Kage are village leaders and are often very powerful ninjas. The Kages- Hokage (of the Fire Country), Mizukage (of the Water Country), Tsuchikage (of the Earth Country), Raikage (of the Lightning Country) and Kazekage (of the Wind Country)- stand equally with the rulers of their countries, oversee the activities of their villages and are the leaders of Ninja culture.
Nukenin
Missing-nin are ninjas who have abandoned their village. These Shinobis are considered traitors and are hunted down because of the secrets they may hold. Other Hidden Villages would be interested purchasing this information because it could be useful in gaining an upper hand in battle. Villages create special units of Shinobi Hunters to take care of this problem.
Oinin
Shinobi Hunters are sometimes codenamed "The Undertaker Squad". Each Hidden Village has a team of hunters, given the specific duty of hunting down Missing-Nins. They kill, then completely dispose of the body of their prey, leaving no trace of it and often having wild birds eat at the dead Missing-nin's internal organs and skin. This is done in order to make sure the Village secrets which a Ninja's body holds- such as Chakra types, herbs eaten and NinJutsu- won't be revealed.
In unofficial translations, they are known as "hunter-nins" or "body erasers".
Black Ops (ANBU)
Each unit within the ANBU has been meticulously trained, each individual going through the basic training that all do, and then afterwards are classed into their proper strengths. There are 7 listed squads, but even then there may be more. For, as mentioned before, only issues that are proper and meaningful are ever listed in textbooks. And as this is merely a manuscript of descriptions and roles, the other less “prominent” ANBU ranks are not noteworthy.
Neko (Cats)- Stealth and Assassination- Governed by the laws of the shadow, the Neko are one of the only units that do not focus on mainstay teamwork. Often times only working in groups of two, the Neko are essentially manufactured from the moment they are chosen to become ANBU. Extremely dynamic tactics in the arts of stealth and trickery are taught to these shinobi so that their missions are completed in a timely and satisfactory manner. Aside from that, they are often classified by their intense speed and picked out for their skills in taijutsu rather than any of the other skill sets. Also required to be very clever, able to think of their feet, the Neko is a unit that represents the ANBU with fatal precision.
Fukurou (Owls)
-Stealth and Information Retrieval- A somewhat enigmatic group of shinobi, the Fukurou are also another branch of the ANBU that usually work in pairs or alone. Not so much a spy, but more of a scout, the Fukurou are often times the carriers of messages from one field to another. In some capacity they are, too, spies, but only within the scope of a battlefield. Their skills include great speed and agility, often taking up great talent long range weaponry as well as their accompanying jutsus.
- Comparable to the Quiksilver in body and build, the ANBU version is so much more efficient and deadly.
Taka (Falcons)
- Hunt and Disposal- One of the deadliest units in the ANBU regime they are well-known and feared throughout the continent. Usually taking up one position in the normal 4-man group, most are highly trained in the art of the senbon needle. Though seemingly less potent than more rugged weapons, there is no application the Taka cannot perform with senbon needles. Masters of acupuncture and even human biology, their capacity even stretches to that of strategic fighters. Able to pinpoint weaknesses in an opponent that wouldn’t normally be readable by untrained eyes, they can develop methods by which to easily incapacitate enemies with the least amount of effort. Truly they are some of the most lethal shinobi in the Leaf.
- Limited medical knowledge is made available to people who take up this division.
Ookami (Wolves)
- Torture and Interrogation- Though all ANBU undergo a thorough training in the art of resisting interrogation, only the Ookami are trained in the use of it. Owing to high intellectual prowess, able to fool the human mind into answering different things even without the use of Genjutsu, they are highly practiced in many areas of torture to attain these means. Often times only traveling with a team to provide backup, they are mostly found in the halls of the ANBU, always delving deeper into the mind and studying the secrets it contains. However, quite a many Ookami have found that the quickest and most effective way to the truth is through the most devastating genjutsus available in the Leaf.
Kuna (Bears)
- Protection and Investigation
- This is one of the more unique units in that it is further split into two classes. The protection aspect of the Kuna unit is that they are usually built up as defensive jutsu users. Most four-man teams usually consist of at least one Kuna with this role. The other faction that the Kuna take up is investigation, which although is a secondary aspect of all bears, some tend to take it a step further. Natural detectives, deducing different sorts of facts through all sorts of evidence, they are also, sometimes, known to be decent trackers. The Kuna, although sharing in a particularly multi-tasked purpose, are still very specialized in many areas.
- Comparable to the Human Tank in body and build, the ANBU version also specializes in many different types of defensive jutsu.
Kawazu (Frogs)
- Medical and Crisis
- Perhaps the most important part of any team, and also a mandatory unit for them as well, nothing is more noteworthy than the team medic. A hybrid of the normal medical-nin, they are gifted with both healing techniques and offensive ones. Granted a more detailed training regimen than the average medical-nin, they are a bit more than generally skilled in both areas. They make some of the most potent support shinobi, while at the same time adding an offensive touch in the taijutsu range that is hard to deny. Medical-nin of the ANBU rank are quite rare in the Chuunin rank, but every so often there are some that are both extremely talented and dedicated that they just cannot be denied the rank.
Ryuu (Dragons)
- Organization and Gathering- The captains and commanders of the ANBU, they are much rarer than even Chuunin-ranked Kawazu. Ryuu are required to be skilled in almost every area of the ANBU, possessing skill-sets from most if not all the units in the organization. Skilled highly in ninjutsu overall, they are the forefront of every battlefield, leading their team bravely from mission to mission. They are also those who are held primarily responsible for the mishaps, failures, and successes of said missions.
Military Police
In the past, the Military Police in the Leaf almost completely consisted of Uchiha family members, but since the clan's own Uchiha Itachi slaughtered it save for one survivor, this is obviously not the case anymore. The MPs are in charge of law enforcement within the village, and their jurisdiction is virtually unlimited except matters that are under the Hokage's direct control. They also respect the Black Ops's own investigative system and inner-organization discipline. 0
